In the US, performance & recording of music is covered by compulsary licenses. (The government says that you don’t have the choice to not license your music.) The royalties are governed by law as well. PerformanceWhen playing a venue with ASCAP/BMI licenses, the venue’s license covers the performance of any cover tunes. If you play covers in a location that’s not covered by an ASCAP/BMI license, you’ll need to get your own license. RecordingRecording a cover (whether live or not) requires obtaining a mechanical or digital license either through the Harry Fox Agency or from the publisher directly. As a last resort, you can obtain a license through the Library of Congress. last updated 1 year ago # |
